The Monarch caterpillars are back

Early one day this week, I saw a pair of Monarch butterflies dancing together over a patch of milkweed. Later that day, I caught sight of this caterpillar on the same patch. By comparison, last year, I saw caterpillars in late May. In 2021, however, there were caterpillars in mid July. So it doesn’t appear that they arrive at the same time each year.

That first day, I only spotted one caterpillar, but a couple of days later, there were a few more. There are FOUR of them in the picture below, can you find them?

And as I looked, I spied more!

And more! I lost count. All sizes too, big ones and little fellows.

With Monarch populations so low, it’s a delight to see.
