A giant tree trunk in the forest at Los Jilgueros

Go into Los Jilgueros park at the north entrance (off Mission), cross the board bridge and then turn left. Just a few feet down on the left, there’s a giant hulking tree stump that’s taller than most trees.

It was a Canary Island palm tree but it doesn’t look like a palm, it’s been beheaded! Palms aren’t native here and they aren’t good trees for a native habitat — they don’t provide a lot of shade, they don’t integrate into the ecosystem. This one had its head cut off, and the trunk was left as a snag to provide homes for birds and bugs.
