Now is the time to plant natives in your yard — they need the winter rains to get established

I have a yard full of native plants. They all have thrived, except the ones that I planted in spring or summer. Plantings in fall or winter have been 100% successful. So if you’re thinking about native plants, get them in the ground NOW.

Native plants are drought tolerant, better for our local soil and weather, better for our local birds, butterflies, critters, pollinators. They’re also beautiful and don’t require supplemental water after the first year.

Locally, the best sources are:

  • Browse the native plants table at Grangetto’s (to the right just before you go in the main entrance). If you want other native plants, you can call Moosa Creek Nursery and they will ship them to Grangetto’s for you.
  • Neel’s Nursery in Oceanside has native plants, available online only for either pickup or delivery. You can pick them up in Encinitas, but it’s a 30 mile drive. Fortunately they deliver in Fallbrook for $8 which is less than the cost of driving there! The plants arrive within a couple of days.
  • Tree of Life nursery in San Clemente doesn’t deliver in Fallbrook and they’re an hour’s drive away. But they do have great plants.

Here’s a video of a presentation last year from local plant lover Rosalie Dedo (sponsored by the Fallbrook Climate Action Team) with some helpful info about native plants gardening:
